Part-time Van Life: What is it?

When I bought LuLu and started this wild adventure, my goal was to live in my van full time. That’s 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. But that’s not the only way to enjoy van life, so I present to you: part-time van life.

Living in a van part time is a great way to experience both what it means to live in a house and also enjoy the freedoms that come along with living in a van (or otherwise nomadically). Some people will pretty much exclusively live in their vans on the weekend. This allows easy maintenance of their job and school. Some folks might live something of a snowbird type of life – in the winter months they kind of lay low, spend time being cozy indoors, and then when spring or summer hits, they hit the road. This is a nice option if you have children who go to school or if you work seasonal jobs (though the travel times may be opposite).

If you work a job that might involve travel, this is a great way to keep your own space while on the road. Or even yet, if you work a remote job, perhaps you want to head out for a week or two and work from somewhere different!

The great thing about van life is that there’s no one “right” way to do it. Part-time van living is just as valid as full time van living! So, if you’re thinking about buying a van but aren’t sure you can commit to selling your house and quitting your job, I’m here to tell you that you can still enjoy van life. There’s a little something for everyone and part-time van life might be just the ticket!

The even better part? You can always change your mind. Maybe today you’ll buy a van and plan to just use it on weekends, and in 6 months you decide you’re all in…and that’s perfectly okay!
