Travel Goals – Vermont

Travel-vermont-list

Maybe I’ll go to see the changing leaves in Vermont and I’ll leave with a husband. That’s how that works right? It doesn’t have to be Christmas to find a husband, does it?

I’m going to be honest when I say that in my head, I essentially clump all of those northern states together. Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Massachusetts. They aren’t all the same, but I’m only learning to differentiate them as I dive into what to do there. I’ve never been that far north nor have I been that far east. I have a friend who lives in the area (originally from Connecticut and I only know that because she called it the Nutmegger state, I think she lives in New Hampshire now) who I’m so excited to see. We went to Moab together several years ago and it was such a fun time.

I’ll be headed to this part of the US come fall and specifically to see the changing maples. I hear its a sight to see and coming from Colorado where we ogle over the aspens every year, I am planning a significant leg of my journey around this.

This is probably also going to sound cheesy – I’m a sucker for cheesy – I want to go to an apple orchard and a maple grove so that I can pick apples and tap maple syrup to my heart’s content! My long term dream would be to homestead and grow and make most of my own food, so I nerd out about stuff like this. I can’t have a great garden situation while traveling in a van, but this is close. Maybe I’ll be able to jump and help out at community gardens along the way.

I recently learned about something called WWOOFing, where you essentially work at a farm and live there in exchange. I think Vermont would be a great place to do this, particularly at an orchard.

Iconic Places

Beautiful drives are plenty when it comes to tourism in Vermont. Travelling through the hills and maples from cozy New England town to cozy New England town. It seems idyllic and clearly I enjoy driving (otherwise what am I doing?). I’m a sucker for some good scenery, but there are also a few really iconic places to check out, too.

First of all, what is a visit to Vermont if you don’t visit the ever infamous Woodstock? I’ve heard it might not be worth the effort, but if I’m going to be in the area, I’m definitely going to take the time to say I’ve been to Woodstock.

There’s also the Ben and Jerry’s headquarters in Vermont and you can try their limited release ice creams there. I’m not a Ben and Jerry’s superfan or anything, so I doubt I’ll visit their ice cream flavor’s graveyard, but limited release and special edition foods are right up my alley.

Cozy Getaways

There are several recommendations that kept coming up over and over when I was looking up what there is to do in Vermont. All of them focus on what I think of as the ever-so-quaint New England towns. I’ve already mentioned apple picking and maple tree tapping, but there’s also taking a pottery class, eating at a farm-to-table restaurant, and photos in front of covered bridges. Yes, many places have these, but something about Vermont is just screaming to be cute and quaint and cozy. Maybe that’s the three steps to finding a husband. Cute. Quaint. Cozy.

Niche Culture

Maybe its because its such a small state, but Vermont also seems to have a very niche tourist scene. The Castles of South Hero are an art installation/collection that may not be worth going out of the way for (to be determined) but definitely cool to spot if you’re in the area. There’s Shelbourne farms where you can learn about cheese. You can visit Knight’s Spiderweb Farm, which I think is so cool and absolutely the most unique. It seems so random but it makes so much sense. Then there’s some beautiful zipline scenery at the Killington Resort. I love ziplines and I will take every opportunity to go on one!

I mustn’t forget. You can spend the night in a tree house. Hotel style. What if I stay in one and I never want to leave? Vermont will own me! That’s the price I’ll have to pay, I guess. The pictures are beautiful and it sounds like such a dream. Treehouse in Vermont is peak niche if you ask me.

Any recommendations for places I absolute must visit while I’m in Vermont? There’s always more to do so tell me below so I can add it to the list! Make sure to check out my bucket list recommendations once I make it to the Green Mountain State and can verify what is worth checking out.
