February 14 will be my third year as a VW owner. That’s the day I bought LuLu and was thrust into this world of mechanics and building. There’s a lot of things that no one tells you when you buy a Volkswagen. There’s a lot of things people tell you when you buy a Volkswagen, and there’s a lot of it you completely ignore.
This is that post.

Do I regret buying LuLu? Absolutely not! I was even mentally prepared for this. I was prepared for the ups and downs, I was prepared for weird things that make no sense (wiring, I’m looking at you!), and I was prepared for having to put in money to make things work. What I wasn’t prepared for? The most simple of tasks taking a million times longer than it should. I ask myself often – is it me? Am I this ill-equipped to remove a nut from a bolt? A screw from a hole? But then I stop myself. Not because I realize that’s silly, but because I’m so angry that this 1-minute task has turned into 3 days of anguish and elbow grease.
So, what’s the truth about owning a VW?
The truth is…

You’ll love it so much for no reason at all!
You’ll get so much joy from simply driving your vehicle, that the silly little things that piss you off won’t matter a bit.
You’ll never have to worry about your radiator – you don’t even have one!

People will randomly wave at you and throw peace signs.
You’ll have an overwhelming urge to enthusiastically wave at other Volkswagen drivers, even when you’re not in your Volkswagen (thereby making yourself look insane).

And no matter how many other Volkswagens you’ve seen, you’ll still want to look at another one, just to see if that quirky little thing is stock or change and if its something worthwhile to modify.
So that’s the truth about owning a VW. I love my LuLu! What can I say? Happy third anniversary!
