What I’ve Learned So Far – Fostering Relationships

It’s no secret that this journey is very focused on creating and fostering relationships and community. With a few weeks spent away under my belt, I’ve had some really lovely moments that I’d like to share.

First of all, I think I grossly underestimated how much I missed being around my friends. My love language, after all, is quality time. I have no idea how I got to the conclusion that I was happy without my friends nearby. As with everything, it takes time to settle into new routines. Once I started to feel settled, however, it made me never want to go back. Even writing this from my own house feels a little odd.

The moment hit when I found myself standing outside in my friends yard just talking with him and another mutual friend. Its wild how something so mundane seeming has felt so out of reach. Its those moments that I love so much. Doing nothing, but together.

In the span of about a month, I’ll have seen about 10 friends all over the state. Honestly, I don’t know how that compares to anyone else, but that’s up from somewhere between 0-2 the month before. These people are people I really care about and distance does no favors when it comes to fostering good relationships. Following up what was a nearly perfect week, it makes so much sense why lack of community feels so ick!

I won’t lie, either. I definitely had this moment of “I could live here” (I’ll dissect that more later) and it was kind of great! Now, I don’t think that means I will, but all things considered that means that I’ll have plenty of opportunity later to feel the same about other places, too.

Here’s to more quality time right around the corner!
